Disappearing Deductible
January 23, 2024**Unveiling the Veil: Hospital Pricing Disparities Revealed**
April 1, 202440% of workplace-insured Americans reported delaying care because of costs. Employers, you can fix this without increasing costs.
In a recent article Hidden crisis: Millions with employer insurance delay care due to high costs we see a brewing storm that can cost employers millions.
π Forty-five percent of employed Americans with insurance didn’t meet their single coverage deductibles in 2023. On average, they were $1,482 short of meeting their deductible.
π Of those who said their work was affected, 31% reported having a panic attack at work.
π Of those affected by delayed care, 19% have spent time working second jobs during work hours to earn money for health care, and 31% have lied to their boss about what they are doing while dealing with delayed care consequences.
π Seventeen percent of workplace-insured Americans have left their jobs to afford better health care.
π Eighteen percent of workplace-insured employees have been unable to pay a medical bill under $500.
REAL story from yesterday – The customer needs an MRI. Their employer plan has a 2k deductible, and the customer states they want to do it at the local hospital because “Then my doctor can compare the history from past MRIs.” I checked the hospital website; the cash price was 6500 (which is insane); check @greenimaging. Their option was 26 miles away; then, a quick web search for an independent imaging center, bingo, one within 2 miles away, got to their website, and 750 were all in.
Opportunity β Employers have the opportunity to educate employees. This took me 10 minutes (most of which was on the hospital site finding their prices, which are intentionally hard to find, but that post is for another day). Or at least offer a nurse navigation, concierge, and advocacy service to help employees save π² π² π² You can read about the power of benefits communication in my #1 bestselling book Life & Death Decisions in the C-Suite.
Employers, this is an easy fix.
